Successful Yarn Substitution Virtual Workshop July 6

Successful Yarn Substitution Virtual Workshop July 6

It can be nerve-wracking to switch the yarn on a project, but sometimes necessary. Learning how to pick a successful substitute means you’ll never have to abandon a pattern written for a discontinued yarn, make a sweater too warm for your climate, choose from a line of colors you don’t like, or feel required to buy a yarn that's not in your budget. We’ll talk about all of the considerations, with a special focus on how fiber content and yarn construction affect the finished project. Students will receive a handout and the slides shown during class, and have many opportunities to ask questions during the lecture-style workshop.

This workshop will take place on Zoom and registered students will receive the Zoom link and a PDF of the class handout two days in advance. This particular class will be useful for anyone who knits or crochets, and I have taught it to many people over the past eighteen years, including guilds and yarn shop employees. The workshop will not be recorded and students do not have permission to record it themselves.

A Note on Pricing: There is a sliding scale for low-income makers.

Materials Needed: This is a lecture style class so you don't need to have any tools and you are welcome to knit or crochet while watching. You may want to print out the handout that will be emailed to you two days in advance and/or have note-taking supplies at hand.

Teacher Background: I have worked in the yarn industry for 19 years, as a yarn shop employee and later manager, teacher, pattern designer, and event host. In all of those situations I have helped people find alternate yarns for patterns, and personally I have almost never used the recommended yarn for a pattern. That experience plus learning to spin yarn have provided me with a breadth of knowledge that I love to share.

Cancellation Policy: If the organizer cancels for any reason, students will be offered a choice of rescheduling or receiving a full refund. If a student cancels before receiving the class handout (two days in advance) they will receive an 80% refund.
